PSG gave Inter Miami no chance, thrashing them 4-0 in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup. The match was decided in the first half, during which the French team scored all four goals. Despite the respect and admiration shown by his former teammates, who greeted him warmly before and after the match, Lionel Messi could do little against his old team.
Just five minutes in, PSG took the lead with a header from Joao Neves following a free kick by Vitinha. However, even with the lead, the French team’s offensive hunger did not wane, as they pressed Mascherano’s side back towards their own goal. Despite numerous goal-scoring opportunities, PSG only managed to extend their lead at the end of the half. But they did so in a flurry that sealed the game.
First, Neves capitalized on a steal by Fabán Ruiz from Busquets, tapping in with the goal nearly empty. Next, Tomás Avilés met a cross from the right and beat Ustari. Just a couple of minutes later, Hakimi collected a rebound off the crossbar to score the fourth goal and put the game out of reach.
The second half was largely uneventful as PSG eased up on the pace, while Inter tried to pull off a heroic comeback with Messi’s help, but failed to do so. This marked the end of Mascherano’s team’s participation, as the French side will face Bayern Munich or Flamengo for a spot in the semifinals.
