Cristhian Stuani signs a contract extension with Girona until 2026.

Christian Stuani will continue to be the emblem of Girona. The club announced on Monday the renewal of the Uruguayan forward for one more season, with the possibility of extending the contract until 2027. At 38 years old, the red-and-white captain accepts the offer that sports director Quique Cárcel had mentioned earlier in June: “We want him to continue, and we have made an offer for him to stay,” he said at that time.

Stuani’s continuation provides relief and assurance for Míchel’s new project, following a season marked by struggle. With Dovbyk’s departure to Roma, the club brought in Abel Ruiz and Bojan Miovski, but neither managed to effectively replace the Ukrainian forward. Despite starting as a substitute for much of the season, the Uruguayan proved decisive, scoring 11 goals in just 1,059 minutes across 32 matches, five of which came in the last seven fixtures of the league.

“I am very excited; I don’t deserve this much,” confessed Stuani with tears after sealing the team’s survival against Valladolid in Pucela, precisely with a goal of his own. The club now recognizes him not only for his performance on the field but also for his presence in the locker room and his commitment to the badge.

Stuani joined Girona in 2017 from Middlesbrough. Eight years later, he has become the greatest symbol in the club’s recent history. In fact, the announcement of his renewal was accompanied by a strong message: “Girona is Stuani. Stuani is Girona.”

Thus, the forward will be the first reinforcement for Míchel’s team for the upcoming season, in which Girona aims to bounce back after a challenging year and regain the level that allowed them to compete in the Champions League. The sports department is now working to strengthen the squad with new signings. But the leadership remains at home.
