Real Madrid basketball player Hugo González is leaving the club to join the Boston Celtics, according to the club’s announcement on Monday. The 19-year-old forward bid farewell on his social media with a message expressing gratitude for his eight years at what he called “the best club in the world.” González also left the door open for a return in the future. “I want to tell you that our paths will cross again, I am sure of it. In the meantime, from a distance, I will support the team as much as, if not more than, as a player. I love Real Madrid and I couldn’t be more grateful for everything it has given me,” he stated.
Hugo González joined Real Madrid in the 2017-2018 season and was selected last week in the NBA draft at the 28th pick in the first round by the Celtics. The Madrid forward will wear the same number as his draft position, as announced by the green franchise on their social media.
Dear Madrid fans,
I want to thank the entire Real Madrid organization for their kindness and treatment during these eight years and, no less importantly, for teaching me how to play basketball and instilling values in me.

“This chapter closes today and I am very proud to have fulfilled a dream: competing with the best players in Europe in the best club in the world. Something that the eleven-year-old boy still hasn’t fully grasped, but that I will never be able to repay to this club for everything it has done for me,” González communicated. He adds his feelings as “one more Madridista.” “Those who know me, know that I have dedicated my whole life to Real Madrid. I have become the player I am today largely because of this club, and wherever I go, it will always count on one more Madridista.” Real Madrid has praised his figure for “his exemplary behavior and dedication” while wearing the white jersey.
Hugo González closes his chapter as a Madridista after winning two league titles, one Copa del Rey, and one Supercopa, and being included in the young ideal five of Liga Endesa this season.
