Qualifiers: Uruguay Prevails, Nearing Qualification for the 2026 World Cup | Bielsa’s Team Outperformed Batista’s Venezuela

SPORTSSPORTS1 month ago24 Views

Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay defeated 2-0 this Tuesday at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo against Fernando Batista’s Venezuela, in the 16th round of the South American Qualifiers.

Just before halftime, after a corner taken by Araújo from the right, Rodrigo Aguirre jumped to head the ball in front of the Venezuelan defense’s passivity, including the goalkeeper, to score the opener for the home team.

In the second half, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, after a great recovery by Bentancur in the opponent’s half, scored the second for La Celeste.

Venezuela pushed to reduce the deficit: Savarino and Herrera came close to scoring, as did Araújo to increase the tally.

However, in the end, the 2-0 score held and strengthened La Celeste’s chances of qualifying for the next World Cup, while casting doubt on Venezuela’s chances of securing the playoff spot, with Bolivia lurking behind the same objective.
