The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) has published the calendar for the 2025-2026 school year in the Official Gazette of the Federation. This educational year will last 185 days, five fewer than in previous years, due to the incorporation of an additional week of vacation. The measure, promoted by the government of Claudia Sheinbaum, aims to improve the working conditions of teachers. The calendar will be valid for all public and private schools incorporated into the national educational system.
The start of classes is scheduled for Monday, September 1, 2025, as part of the adjustments made to integrate the complementary week of rest that authorities announced in May. “(In Mexico) they finish in July and start in August, a little over a month of vacation, and the teachers have less because when the school calendar ends, they stay doing work and start earlier, so we proposed an additional week because they deserve it,” said Sheinbaum at a meeting with the press.
The first holiday of the school period will be on Tuesday, September 16, for Mexico’s Independence Day. Work will also be suspended on other official holiday dates such as Mexican Revolution Day, which is moved to Monday, November 17, this year. There will be no classes on December 25, January 1, 2026, Monday, February 2 (for the anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution), and Monday, March 16 (moved forward for the birthday of Benito Juárez). The holidays in May will be on the 1st, 5th, and 15th, in observance of Labor Day, the Battle of Puebla, and Teacher’s Day, respectively.
Winter vacations will be from December 22, 2025, to January 9, 2026, while Spring Break will start on March 30 and classes will resume on April 13. The last day of the school cycle will be July 15, marking the beginning of summer vacation.
As already established, on the last Friday of each month, teachers will meet to review and analyze the curriculum. This activity is part of the Technical School Council meetings and intensive continuous training workshops. This year, there is also a scheduled awareness campaign on sexual abuse and child mistreatment, set for September 8.
The pre-registration process for students wishing to enter the 2026-2027 school year in preschool, first grade of primary, and first grade of secondary will take place from February 3 to February 13, 2026.
