I have returned to the Titanic in VIP format, which, as is known, was no guarantee of survival: it is worth remembering that among those who drowned were John Jacob Astor IV—the richest person not only on board but in all of the United States—powerful American railroad magnate Charles Melville Hays, the eloquently named Benjamin Guggenheim, and John Hugo Ross, the millionaire from Winnipeg who famously said, “It will take more than an iceberg to get me out of bed.”
